Research Interests
Our laboratory developed endoscopic techniques for closure of colon perforations and colon resections at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston. We are trying to develop techniques to take care of patients referred to us with benign polyps that are tethered to the colon wall from previous resections to avoid surgery. Watch this recording of institutional grandrounds on colon perforation closure by G.S.Raju. Please click here to see it. The American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy featured a column on ask the expert on this subject.
At The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, we are applying the knowledge and technical skill garnered in endoscopic closure of perforations to remove large flat lesions in the colon without surgery using the endoscopic mucosal resection technique; in addition our team is developing a teaching video for the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy to help others learn and refine this technique. Please see this video on Endoscopic Closure of Colon Perforations.
My research profile can be accessed.
Our goal is to build the best colon cancer prevention program at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Clinical Interests
My clinical research interests include colon cancer screening and prevention. Our group utilizes advanced techniques for resection of large and flat lesions that required surgery in the past. Using a comprehensive colonoscopy screening techniques, the adenoma detection rate, which is a surrogate marker of the quality of colonoscopy screening, is high at our center. You could look up our adenoma detection rates.

AJAY VARMA
Ajay Varma has a multifaceted personality. He is an aeronautic engineer, entrepreneur, TV serial producer, filmmaker and now an actor. He is making his debut as actor with Neelakanta’s Nandanavanam 120 kms. Idlebrain.com catches up with this sophisticated man for chitchat -
Tell us about your background?
I was born in Hyderabad and did my preliminary education in Hyderabad. Then I moved into US. I did my graduation in Denver and then moved to New York. I did my graduation in Aeronautics Engineering. I spent 9 years in NY.
What did you want to become?
When I did Aeronautic Engineering, I wanted to be a flight engineer. By the time I finished my graduation, I decided to quit aviation. I joined my friends who are into IT field in 1997. We started a company.
When did you develop your interest in films?
I was always interested in films. I produced a TV serial called ‘Seeta Mahalakshmi’ in year 2000. This TV serial ran on Gemini TV for 390 episodes. It also won 11 Nandi awards which is a record so far. That was the only one program I did for television, as TV channel business was not in an organized state at that time. Though I got lot of appreciation, I lost huge money in that venture. I went to NY after that stint and wrote a few scripts. I also produced few short films.
I wrote one script I wanted to direct and I came back to Hyderabad. It is an experimental crossover feature film called ‘Animal’. I finished shooting and postproduction of the film and I was about to go back to Hyderabad when Neelakanta offered me the role of hero in Nandanavanam 120 kms.
Were you interested in acting?
I was so excited when I watched ‘Show’ film by Neelakanta. It is one of the best films I have seen. I told Neelakanta that I would like to act in his films if he were to continue making films like Show. Three years after show Neelakanta still had me in his mind and offered me this role in N120kms.
Tell us about your experimental film Animal?
Animal is 1.50 hrs experimental feature film. It deals with the end of humanity. My take was if humans evolved from animals because of necessities, the same necessities can push a human being into an animal. It was pretty much an apocalyptic look at humanity. I shot the entire film in Hyderabad in 22 days with in a budget of 5000 USD. This film has multiple languages like Telugu, English and Hindi. I let the characters talk in their own languages. I took two characters of a farmer turned thief and a prostitute in the city. The story follows how these people from being what they are pushed into doing as incredible as killing people. The characters of thief and prostitutes are played by Kavi and Sini respectively.
Animal is very raw in narration and it appeals only to the crossover audiences. I planned this film for film festival circuit. I am planning to tie up with an art house agency in NY. I can reach those art house agencies only through film festivals.
Tell us about N120kms?
It is a wonderfully woven drama which ends up being a thriller. Neelakanta is known for good drama in his films. I can classify this film as a dramatic thriller. It has tightly knit characters. There is so much depth in the subject and it is surprising that Neelakanta opted for fresh faces.
What are your observations on Neelakanta as a filmmaker?
There are certain things in Neelakanta that inspired me. Neelakanta has the unique way of exploiting the poetic realism – metaphysical relationships between two objects. He does excellent detailing of each character. I always admire Neelakanta because he is downright original. It is very difficult in this competitive industry for the filmmakers to be original. He is very simple in his narrative. There is an interesting elegance that flows in his scenes. Originality, simplicity and elegance are three things Neelakanta should be branded with.
You are an entrepreneur, filmmaker, TV serial producer and actor. Where do you see yourself in future?
The moment I became a filmmaker, I got myself rid of duties as entrepreneur and I decided to focus of my film Animal. I want to focus on films.
What exactly is acting in opinion?
I don’t know how I can describe acting. I don’t think I have acted in N120kms at all. Neelakanta has written the script so in detail that I did not need any reference for acting.
Are you considering any future acting projects?
I have been listening to few scripts. I will probably choose one to go with by end of this month.
Have you done any courses in filmmaking?
No. I had a big decision to make in the year 2000. That is to whether put 60000 USD for the film course in Tisch School of Arts, New York University or probably produce something in India. So I decided to go and produce TV serial in Hyderabad.
Tell us about your co-artist Manasa?
She is a student who is doing her film editing course. There is always a technical inclination in her approach. Like me, she also stumbled into acting by chance. She is a quick learner. She does catch things sometimes quicker than I could. She has got interesting ease in her acting which will take her to places.
What’s your immediate step after N120kms?
I am looking at a script to act in now. I am keeping my directorial ambitions under wraps for sometime.
RAMARAJU
Ramaraju’s passion for cinema is undying. He has gone through many professions and processes and came right back to the work he has aspired to do. That is to make a film - in a honest way with heart-touching content. He didn’t bother about economics, calculations, pulses of moviegoer and made a film ‘Mallela Theeramlo Sirimalle Puvvu’ the way he wanted to see. Mallela Theeram film is releasing on 6 July. Here are the excerpts of idlebrain.com exclusive interview with Ramaraju -
Background:
I am basically from Bhimavaram and just a graduate. After my graduation, I have prepared for civils exams. I had gone to the interview as well. Dr. S Rao has suggested that I can’t handle bureaucracy and asked me to explore in other fields. Ram Gopal Varma is a distant relative of me and I went and joined him in direction department and worked for films like Deyyam. RGV told me that the work of AD (assistant director) is more of a labor work and has very less creativity and script orientation attached to it. He asked me to concentrate on creativity and work on script. There was a gap after that.
Then I joined IT field and worked on Oracle database. I realized that it was not my cup of tea. I decided that I should discover myself and cinema should be a self-discovery for me. My life is more like discovering myself. Then I went back to cinema and joined the team of Nivas for Shool film. Anurag Kashyap is also a part of Shool team. I bonded well with Anurag and worked with him for films like Black Friday, Paanch etc. Then there was a mysterious gap.
After making a name for himself in Bollywood as a director with different vision, Anurag Kashyap suggested that I should make a small film in Telugu with different and niche content and make them commercially appealing. Makes film that connect well with moviegoers and at the same time, they should also be contenders at film festivals. That’s a trend started by Anurag Kashyap in Bollywood and it worked tremendously well for him. Mallela Theeram is such an attempt to make a honest and decent film without looking at what people like in a film. There are no calculations in Mallela Theeram, I just kept my heart’s content.
What’s the content of Mallela Theeramlo Sirimalle Puvvu?
Mallela Theeramlo Sirimalle Puvvu is nothing but my reflections. Love can happen at any point of time. Most of our films end the moment the lead pair gets married. But story of Mallela Theeram deals with after marriage. This film is narrated from woman’s point of view who has dignity and voice. She wants to fall in love with her husband after the arranged marriage. It’s about she exploring another option when she finds her husband to be materialistic and unreciprocated to love.
What’s the economics of the movie?
We have shot the film using Red MX camera and the budget is under one crore.
You made an honest film. Getting people to watch it is very difficult for such films?
Yes. I must thank my friends in media for going out of their way to promote the film. Mallela Theeram is the love of labor for many people.
I always believe that ‘commerciality=connectivity’. Irrespective of the genre of the film, connectivity drives the economics. I must thank Sekhar Kammula who offered to buy the film and promote it as he has gone through similar struggles when he had to release Anand film. He watched the film twice as it made him nostalgic. He arranged a special screening for himself by paying theater rent at Prasad labs preview theater.
You look like a honest guy with integrity. How did you end up joining Ram Gopal Varma?
Ram Gopal Varma is a distant relative and he is the only connection to film industry for me. But personally I am not a fan of Ram Gopal Varma. You will be surprised if I say that I hated Shiva film. But I like Ram Gopal Varma as a businessman. My most favorite director is Balachandar. You can see integrity in the characters of Balachandar’s film. I tried bringing such integrity in Mallela Theeram film. I like Bapu films to certain extent like Muthyala Muggu, Gorantha Deepam and Vamsavruksham. I have a lot of respect for K Viswanath.
What is your next film?
I want to make a true romance film with a unique flavor.

One day during his visit to London, King Jai Singh was walking in casual dress in Bond Street. He saw a Rolls Royce showroom and went inside to inquire about the Price and Features etc of their cars.
Considering him a just another Poor Indian citizen, showroom salesmen insulted him and almost showed him the way out of the showroom. After this insult, King Jai Singh came back to his Hotel room and asked his servants to call the showroom that King of Alwar city is interested in purchasing their few Cars.
After few hours King reached the Rolls Royce showroom again but with his full astonishing royal manner and in his royal costume. Until he reached the showroom there was already red carpet on the floor and all the salesmen were bent with respect. The King purchased all the six cars that they had at showroom at that time and paid full amount with delivery costs.
After reaching India, King ordered municipal department to use all those six Rolls Royce cars for cleaning and transporting city’s waste. World’s number one Rolls Royce cars were being used for transportation of City’s waste, the news spread all over the world rapidly and the reputation of Rolls Royce Company was in drains.
Whenever someone used to boast in Europe or America that he owned a Rolls Royce, people used to laugh saying, “which one? The same that is used in India for carrying the waste of the City?”
Due to such reputation damages, sales of Rolls Royce dropped rapidly and revenue of company owners started falling down. Then they sent a Telegram to the king in India for apologies and requested to stop transportation of waste in Rolls Royce cars. Not only this but they also offered Six new cars to king free of cost.
When King Jai Singh observed that Rolls Royce has learnt a lesson and they are sorry for their mistakes, king stopped using those cars for carrying wastes.

Ram Gopal Varma also known as RGV is an Indian film director, screenwriter and producer. His work is predominantly in Bollywood and Telugu cinema. Varma has directed, written and produced films across multiple genres — psychological thrillers, underworld gang warfare, road movies, horrors, fictional films, politician-criminal nexus, experimental films, musicals, parallel cinema, and docudrama. Two of his films Siva (1989), and Satya (1998) were show cased among CNN-IBN's list of hundred best Indian films of all time. In 2005, Indiatimes Movies included Satya in its list of 25 Must See Bollywood Movies.[7] The film marked the introduction of a new genre of film making, a variation of film noir that has been called Mumbai noir, of which Varma is the acknowledged master.
He directed path breaking film's like Siva (1989) and Kshana Kshanam (1991) for which he has garnered Andhra Pradesh state Nandi Awards for Best Direction. In 1999, He has garnered the National Film Award for scripting and producing Shool. In the same year He directed Prema Katha for which he received his third Nandi Award for Best Director. He garnered three Filmfare Awards and five Bollywood Movie Awards. In 2010, He received critical acclaim at the International film festival of Fribourg, Switzerland, where in, a retrospective of Mumbai noir, was staged by film critic, Edward Waintrop.
He gained recognition in Bollywood with the 1990 Hindi film, Shiva premiered at International Film Festival of India, and the 1991 supernatural thriller, Raat. In 1995 he directed another blockbuster Rangeela. He then directed Satya (1998), which won six Filmfare Awards, including the Critics Award for Best Film, and was show cased among the Indian panorama section, at the 1998 International Film Festival of India. Varma received the Bimal Roy memorial award for best direction for this film.
Satya, together with his 2002 film Company (which he directed, won three IIFA Awards, seven Filmfare Awards, and a Bollywood Movie Award for best direction, and was premiered at the 2004 Austin Film Festival) and the 2005 film D (which he produced), form an "Indian gangster trilogy". In 2006, he re-made a new version of Shiva, which was screened at the New York Asian Film Festival, where a retrospective featuring several of his previous movies was staged. Alongside Shiva, the festival screened his earlier successful films Company, Ek Hasina Thi, Ab Tak Chhappan and Sarkar.
In 2008, he directed another blockbuster, Sarkar Raj, which was archived at the Academy of Motion Pictures library. In 2013, he directed a docudrama, The Attacks of 26/11 showcased to critical acclaim at the Berlin International Film Festival, in the Panorama as well as the Competition section. Other acclaimed films at the box office, that Varma directed include Gaayam (1993), Anaganaga Oka Roju (1997), Kaun (1999), Jungle (2000), Bhoot (2003), Sarkar (2005), Phoonk (2008), Rakta Charitra (2010), and Katha Screenplay Darshakatvam Appalaraju (2011).
Varma completed BE in civil engineering from V.R. Siddhartha Engineering College, Vijayawada. Even during this period, Varma remained a film buff, through his uncle. Varma would skip classes often and watch films instead. He would watch the same film repeatedly "just to watch certain scenes which interested him." According to him, that is how he learned film direction.
After a brief stint as a site engineer for Krishna Oberoi hotel in Hyderabad, he put his dreams on the back burner and decided to go to Nigeria to make some money. It was at this moment that he visited a video rental library in Hyderabad. He loved the idea and decided to start one of his own at Ameerpet in Hyderabad, through which he slowly developed connections with the film world. Without being successful as a fourth assistant director in B. Gopal's film Collector Gari Abbai, Varma directly ventured into film direction, with the 1989 Telugu film, Siva.
Before Varma started his career in the Telugu film industry, he lingered on the sets of films such as Collector Gari Abbai and Rao Gaari Illu. His father Krishnam Raju Varma, was a sound recordist at Annapurna Studios, which was then owned by thespian Akkineni Nageswara Rao. Varma managed to meet Nagarjuna Akkineni and narrated a scene to the actor which impressed him. The result of their collaboration was a film on the criminalisation of student politics — Siva. It was a blockbuster with Varma demonstrating his technical expertise and storytelling skills. The success of the film in Telugu led to a Hindi remake with similar success.
Varma's next film was Kshana Kshanam with Venkatesh and Sridevi which got him noticed by Bollywood critics. It was dubbed into Hindi as Hairaan. Then he made films such as Raatri and Antham. While Gaayam with Jagapathi Babu and Anaganaga Oka Roju with J.D. Chakravarthy were successful, Govinda Govinda with Nagarjuna and Sridevi proved to be a moderate success at the box office. During this period, Varma produced films such as Money and Money Money and was the screenwriter for Mani Ratnam's Tamil movie Thiruda Thiruda.

Zamindaris of Rajus
Nizam/Colonial Period:
The Sultans, Nizams and British all employed Rajus as the governors of estates with the responsibility of collecting taxes. In 1857 the British broke up the estates and realigned the bigger brigands into Princely states and the lesser ones as Zamindars or Jagirdars. These zamindars were abolished after the formation of the Indian Union in 1947.

Modern community:
After the Independence of India Zamindari was abolished. During this time many Raju zamindars donated their property and land liberally for the upliftment of poor and Education. Vizianagaram is the oldest and largest Hindu Princely State of Andhra Pradesh (Samsthanam). Maharaja PVG Raju donated his Royal State to Republic of India. He also donated enormous wealth, Khazana, Land, Gold, Diamonds, Propertis, Palaces to Korukonda Sainik school, Andhra University, Mansas Trust and to poor and needy for schools, colleges and hospitals. Rajus of Andhra are designated as forward caste. Most of Rajus are doing well in Education, Information Technology and other fields. Despite sizeable population of Rajus being economically backward, Andhra Kshatriya Rajus never asked for Reservation.
Legends History :
There have been varying accounts about the origins of the Raju community. Some include them among the military tribes of Rajput descent.
Regarding this community Edgar Thurston in his seven volume Castes and Tribes of Southern India writes...The Maharajas of Vizianagaram claim to be Kshatriyas from the Rajputana and the leaders of the people of gotrams said to have come to the Northern Circars centuries ago. It is noted in connection with the battle of Padmanabham(in present Visakhapatnam district) in 1794 AD that Rajputs formed a rampart round the corpse of Vijay Rama Raju. Padmanabham will long be remembered as the Flodden of the Rajputs of Vizianagaram...as a class they are the handsomest and best developed men in the country and differ so much in feature and build from other Hindus that they may usually be distinguished at a glance...they are mostly Vaishnavites, and their priests are Brahmans...Rajus of course assume the sacred thread, and are very proud and particular in their conduct. Brahmanical rites of Punya Havachanam (Purification), Jata Karma (Birth ceremony), Nama Karanam (Naming ceremony), Chaulam (Tonsure), and Upanayanam (Thread ceremony) are performed...at weddings the Kasi Yatra (Mock flight to Benares) is performed...at their wedding they worship a sword, which is a ceremony usually denoting a soldier caste...they use a wrist string made of cotton and wool, the combination peculiar to Kshatriyas, to tie the wrists of the happy couple...in some villages, Rajus seem to object to the construction of a pial, or raised platform, in front of their houses. The pial is the lounging place where visitors are received by day.
Historically South Indian royal families of Kshatriyas (Rajus) had marital relationship with Central and North Indian royal families, like Rajas of Vizianagaram, Salur and Kurupam had marital relationships with the Rajputana royal families.
The history of South India and the Puranas reveal that the Andhra Kshatriyas descended from the Aryavarta (northern India) to the south due to internal conflicts, foreign invasions, famine etc. Vayu Purana, Buddhist and Jain literatures mention about migration of Ikshvakus Kshatriyas to southern India.
Rajus traditional accounts claim descent from Ikshvaku, Vishnukundina, Chalukya, Paricchedi and Kota Vamsa.
Some historians and traditional accounts link Rajus to ancient Andhra Ikshvakus, which was the first Kshatriya kingdom in Andhra which ruled during 2nd and 3rd Centuries CE and are purportedly linked to ancient Ikshvakus of Kosala.
According to most historians and by the inscriptional evidences of Paricchedi and Chagi ruling clans, during 4th - 5th century AD few Kshatriyas of four clans travelled from northern India to the south, where they initially worked as feudatories of Vakatakas before establishing the Vishnukundina Kingdom. While some Kshatriyas of Andhra are said to be descendents of Eastern Chalukyas and few other Kshatriya dynasties.
Raju surnames:
The surnames of Andhra Kshatriyas were created or formed during the 12th, 13th and 14th Centuries (AD). Prior to that, there were only Gotras (clans) but no surnames. Marriage alliances were being made between persons of different Gotras but not with persons of the same Gotras. At the time of formation of surnames, the villages where persons were residing generally became their surnames.
From the data collected by Sri Buddharaju Varahala Raju, there were 109 surnames for Andhra Kshatriyas. 80 surnames were based on village names; 20 were based on Chivalry names; 1 based on nature and 8 based on other ways. It did not include Kshatriya Raju surnames of Karnataka. For some families the names of their famous and prominent ancestors became their surnames. For example - Bhupathi Raju, Rudra Raju, Tirumala Raju etc.
Gotra (clan), Vamsam means heredity. The Vamsams are of two types:
Janma Vamsam (based on Birth)
Vidya Vamsam (based on Education)
Those Kshatriyas who were educated under certain Sages (Rishis) became their Vamsiyas. They belong to the respective Vidya Vamsams.
Sage Apastamba wrote a book named Apastamba Sutramulu incorporating the traditions of persons wearing the sacred thread (Dvija). All the traditions and ceremonies of Rajus are based on these Gotras. The Rajus of Northern Circars belong to these Four Gotras:
Kaundinya
Vasistha
Dhananjaya
Kasyapa
The Rajus of Vijayanagaram have these additional Gotras:
Atreya
Bharadwaja
Pasupati
Viswamitra
They have marriage alliances with the persons belonging to the other Gotras. As Vasistha was the guru of both Koundinya and Vasistha Gotras, he is considered as the Pithru (Father) of both of them and so there were no marriage alliances between these two Gotras. However, for the last few centuries they discarded this tradition.
Most surnames in Andhra Pradesh come from the family's town of origin so some of the surnames are found in other Andhra communities. Some of the Kshatriya names are actually the same but due to regional pronunciation differences they are spelt differently.
